The self defense program at Modern Martial Arts provides instruction in Krav Maga as part of a well-rounded curriculum which includes Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) , and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). We offer classes for kids and adults alike. Our self defense classes use a comprehensive approach to self defense, integrating and encouraging positive reinforcement, respect, and discipline to motivate students to reach higher levels of self-defense skills and overall fitness.

Through fun and demanding self-defense classes, we emphasize individual progress as well as self-improvement and self-confidence. We offer self defense classes in Manhattan for adults and children ages 3 and up; and each program is specifically designed to meet the age appropriate needs of the students.

What do you teach?

We teach classes with an emphasis on self defense, specifically the krav maga defense system. Krav maga is the self-defense system used by the Israeli Defense Forces to neutralize attackers as quickly as possible. This system is designed such that it be used by anyone regardless of size, strength, or fitness. Our programs encourage a warrior mentality to build confidence both on and off the mat.

Is it effective?

In a hostile situation, the goal is to get away quickly and safely. But it's not always possible to simply run away, which is where our program comes in. The techniques we teach foster improved reflexes, increased awareness, and the ability to turn on defensive behaviors when needed. Our program challenges you to face your fears and pushes you to perform at your best during every class.

Will I get a workout?

Yes! Self defense classes are an excellent way to build strength, endurance and burn calories. Similar to a kickboxing class, you will build endurance with intense cardio drills and tone muscle with our strength training exercises. You will leave class feeling energized, happy, and healthy!

But I'm not in good shape / I haven't worked out in a really long time...

That's okay! Our program challenges students to realize their own physical fitness goals, not to be judged by our expectations. Differences in physical abilities are respected and each student is motivated to exceed their personal fitness goals. We create a fun, safe environment that will motivate you to knockout your fitness fears.

I've never done this sort of activity before. What's your beginner class like?

All of our classes are open level. Our instructors love welcoming new students into our community, and they are able to cater to the needs of both beginners and advanced practitioners. During training we pair our beginners with our advanced students for personalized instruction, so no one feels left behind.

Do I need boxing gloves?

Boxing gloves are not required-- the techniques we teach focus on using your body's other weapons (like knees and elbows) rather than punches. However, we also incorporate kickboxing into our curriculum as part of overall fitness. So if you have boxing gloves and handwraps, bring them!
